Ground Beef Taco Seasoning Recipe

This is the spice mixture commonly used for ground beef-style tacos - it's much cheaper to make at home vs buying the kit. Save some money and just buy the shells.

  • 1 1/2 tbsp table ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

Allow the mixture to simmer for 5-10 minutes or until desired consistency.

Optional: At the end add a splash of lime juice OR lemon juice OR 1 tsp of vinegar to brighten the flavors.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup chili powder
  • 1/3 cup cumin
  • 3 tbsp diamond crystal kosher salt
  • 3 tbsp table ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp oregano
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cornstarch

Instructions

  • Add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl and then store in a mason jar or similar storage container.

To Use this Seasoning

  • Brown 1-2 lb of ground beef in a pan – drain excess grease or pat with paper towel to remove (or leave it).
  • Use 1 tbsp of the above mixture (this is 1 packet) with 2/3 cup of water.
  • Mix well.
  • Simmer for 5-10 minutes or until at desired consistency.
  • Optional: Finish the ground beef with a splash of lemon juice or lime juice or white vinegar to brighten the spices.

Notes

This bulk batch makes 8 “packets” of seasoning.
If you like a little kick, add either:
  • 1 tsp Cayenne OR
  • 1 tbsp Crushed red pepper flakes
Other notes:
Consider subbing the chili powder for “dark” chili powder for a smokier taste.
If you don’t have a lot of these ingredients, the main ones really are just cumin and chili powder + corn starch to thicken the sauce.
