All You Need are 2 Ingredients (+ Maybe 1 More)
Use equal parts:
- 1 cup Water
- 1 cup White Sugar
This is the basis for any simple syrup a 1:1 ratio of water and sugar; So if you want less, use 1/2 cup to 1/2 cup or 1/4 cup to 1/4 cup, etc.
Optional stuff to add:
- 2 tbsp of your favorite BBQ sauce.
- 2-3 tbsp of fruit preserves – like apricot or apple.
- Zest from 1 whole lemon, lime, orange, etc.
- 2-3 tbsp of brewed coffee from the morning.
- 1-2 tbsp liquor like whiskey or bourbon (don’t boil the syrup after adding).
What you add is entirely dependent on what you like and what flavors you want to sing.
Combine in a Pot Over Medium-High
DO NOT allow the syrup to boil – you’re only bringing to a simmer and waiting for the sugar to dissolve and be well combined.
Allow to cool for 10-15 minutes.
Transfer to a glass container or similar.
Store in your refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.
If You Added Preserves, Jam, etc.
I like to strain the pulp through a fine mesh sieve.
But that’s totally optional.
How and When to Apply to Smoked Meat
Apply this with a squirt bottle or basting brush AFTER the meat has finished cooking and resting.
Like ribs – just before slicing and serving, apply a layer to the ribs.
